Dehydrated Citrus Garland

Hello and happy Saturday! Dehydrated citrus garland is a traditional method of decoration for autumn/Christmas time and I decided I needed to try it out! I love the beautiful, warm colors displayed in the variety of citrus!

For this project I used grapefruit, naval oranges, lemons, and limes. Use any citrus you like; I know the garland will look beautiful!

This recipe is very easy but can take up to 18 hours to complete due to how long it may take to dehydrate the citrus. See below for some no-waste solutions for the citrus scraps.

Ingredients

2 grapefruit
3 naval oranges
3 lemons
4 limes
No-Waste Solutions
6 cups white vinegar

Directions

1.
1.
Wash and dry the citrus. Slice the citrus into even slices, about 1/4-inch thickness.
Any slices that have no citrus meat and the ends of the citrus can be put aside for later. Don't throw it away.

Set your dehydrator according to the instructions regarding temperature and length of dehydration time for citrus.
I set mine at 135*F for 8 hours at first but wound up having to dehydrate an additional 4 hours before checking again. The limes were dry (so I removed that tray from the dehydrator) but everything else needed another 4 hours before everything was dry. You'll know the citrus has dried when it is no longer sticky.

I arranged all the dried citrus on a baking sheet so I could ensure I had an accurate count for the garlands.

You can use any string, fishing line, or thread you want to string together the garland. I used a length of thread doubled on it self and used a needle to help thread through the citrus. Even narrow ribbon would work!

I separated the citrus scraps into two piles: oranges and grapefruit together and limes and lemons together. I took two large Mason jars and put the orange and grapefruit scraps into one jar and the lemon and lime scraps into the other.
Pour enough vinegar into each jar to cover the scraps. Screw on the lids and place in a cool, dark area. Allow to infuse for a couple weeks and then pour the liquid into a spray bottle and use for cleaning! You'll have homemade citrus vinegar.
