Crispy Tofu

Looking for an easy and delicious recipe for crispy tofu? You’ve come to the right place. My recipe is versatile and can be adjusted to fit your needs and to what you have in the pantry. Tofu goes well with just about anything because of it’s mild taste; I’ve eaten it with different kinds of sauces and it always turns out delicious.

The most important part of the recipe is to be patient while the tofu fries. If you rush this step or are too rough with the tofu you’ll end up with a tofu scramble instead of crunchy cubes!

Once done, drizzle with barbecue sauce, soy sauce, miso sauce, or whatever you’re feeling like trying. A little tofu goes a long way so one package of tofu from the store will be more than enough for one family meal.

Ingredients

Adjust Servings
14 oz extra-firm tofu
6-8 Tbsp potato starch OR tapioca starch or cornstarch
1 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp dried parsley

Directions

1.
1.
Press the tofu either in a tofu press, or like me, wrap the tofu in a tea towel and place on a plate or shallow baking sheet. Set a heavy pan on top of the tofu and allow the extra juices in the tofu to be pressed out. This should take a minimum of 20 minutes.
Once the tofu is pressed, heat a large skillet over medium-low heat with enough neutral oil to cover the bottom of the skillet. I like to use avocado oil.

Using a sharp knife, cut the tofu into small cubes, about 1 inch-sizes, and place into a medium bowl.
Sprinkle the potato starch, 1 Tbsp at a time, over the tofu and gently toss to cover on each side. You may not need all the potato starch.

3.
Sprinkle on the seasonings and gently toss. Gently press the seasonings into the tofu. You just want to ensure the seasonings stick to the tofu, but don't smash the tofu.

Place the tofu gently into pan in a single layer.
After a few minutes and the bottoms of the tofu are golden and will freely release from the pan (if they're sticking, they're not ready to be turned; give it a couple more minutes), use tongs or a chopstick to gently turn each tofu cube onto the next side. Repeat until all sides of the tofu are golden.

Gently remove the tofu from the pan and place on a plate to drain from the oil.

Serve hot with a side of rice or veggies and drizzle with your desired sauce. I like soy sauce or miso but it is very salty to don't use too much! Barbecue sauce is also tasty and sweet and sour sauce is great!

Notes

Since most sauces have salt, I don't recommend adding salt to the tofu. If you want to use other seasonings than I mentioned above, feel free! Basically any seasoning will suit tofu.
